Who Needs Neilsen Ratings, Anyways?

Disclaimer: I could never have a job where I review television shows.  I like my reality show trashy, I like my Law & Order: SVU predictable, and I never "got" Lost.  I also have a passion for shows that end up getting canceled wayyy too quickly, like the currently on-the-bubble show Smash.  An affinity for shows that live a very short life is probably the best indicator of my taste in TV.

Have you watched Smash?  I think Katherine McPhee is adorable, the music is a refreshing change from Glee, and the Broadway elements make my heart soar.  Entertainment Weekly offered up some solid theories about why it isn't catching on, and I'm afraid Smash might take the same road some of my other favorite short-lived series did.

Here are a few of the dearly departed over the years:

My friend (and fellow blogger) Ashley and I both loved this show, and even met the cast when they came to UCLA our freshman year of college.  Bryan Greenberg and Laura Prepon were so cute in this show!  Bryan Greenberg played a guy who returns to his small town after writing a best-selling book based on his hometown friends.  He spends the series reconnecting with his former girlfriend (played by Prepon), trying to figure out if her son is actually his, and facing the folks he turned his back on.  This show also turned me on to REO Speedwagon.  Gone too soon, let me tell you!

I used to watch this with my fam bam every single week.  Definitely a feel good kind of show, but it never felt too religious-y nor did it focus on any particular faith.  I thought Amber Tamblyn was really funny, and her older brother was played by Jason Ritter.  Despite only running two seasons, the show was nominated for an Emmy... maybe I do have good taste after all.

Confession: I didn't actually watch this show when it was on TV.  I discovered it a year or so after it went off the air, and watched nearly all of the series on a lazy weekend.  The three main characters were bada** women in NYC, juggling careers, family and hot dates.  Who says you cannot have it all?  Considering how much craziness was fit into two seasons, NBC should have let it run for a few more!

Do you have a favorite show that was gone too soon?

  2. I don't watch a lot of TV and it's hard for me to stick with one show, but I did watch Joe Millionaire, which only aired for one season. It was the one where all the women thought he was a millionaire, but really he was just a construction worker. I was obsessed! And then they took it off. Sad day.

  3. I thought Smash was doing really well? Sadly, I usually only watch reality tv. Haha. Such trash, but so good. The only "real" shows that I watch are Grey's Anatomy and Criminal Minds...both of which I ADORE!

    1. I am hoping Smash's ratings pick up... I've been reading that they are a little low but I love it! And Criminal Minds is one of my faves too :)

  4. I LOVED October Road. I was actually talking about it the other day and couldn't remember the name. Sad. I also love Smash, and I'm praying it doesn't get cancelled. It's so great, and you're right, a refreshing change from Glee.

That being said, I would LOVE to review television shows for a living. Ha!

  6. My favorite was Moonlight. It was a vampire show back in 2007. Currently, I'm writing up a blog post about it, so it's kinda funny that you did this post. :)

  7. I LOVED October Road. I still think about that show and wonder what would have happened with the little boy. Another one is What About Brian. Loved it so much and then POOF...it was gone!
